Shiga Kogen Snow Monkey Powder Long Weekend

Overview

Shiga Kogen is by far Japan's biggest ski resort area with 18 interconnected ski resorts all accessible with the one lift pass. The high altitude brings consistently great snow conditions and with over 80kms of courses and 70 lifts, the resort is great for all levels of skiier/boarder, from first-timers to advanced.

This long weekend trip is one of our most popular trips, always booking out well in advance. It's peak powder time; in previous seasons we have seen over a metre fall within 24 hours!

Shiga Kogen is also famous for the onsen bathing snow monkeys! The Shiga Kogen snow monkeys are a definite must see and we will be visiting the monkey onsen on the final day of the trip. The snow monkeys have lived in the Shiga Kogen area for several generations and come down from the mountains each day to bath in the natural hot springs at the base. We will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the hot spring bathing monkeys in their natural habitat.

Perfect timing for powder snow. Hotel was old Japanese style, food is decent. Easy access to Alpina rental and gondola right next to it.

Great trip with everything covered, from hotel/food/attractions etc. Everything was really efficient in regards to rentals and gear, like having us try them on the night before so there was no hustle for that in the morning. I also really appreciated the late check out (1PM). It's not very often you're able to sleep in on a trip so that was a great breather after two days of snowboarding! Would like to go again and would definitely recommend to friends.

Again, TSC organised a perfect trip to Shiga-Kogen. All parts of the journey left punctually. And although there was lots of traffic due to the long weekend, we arrived back at Shinjuku in good time. The snow conditions were perfect. A very enjoyable ski-trip.

It was my first trip with Tokyo Snow Club. I decided to sign up after a friend recommended them to me, and I was not disappointed. I found the whole thing to be well-organized. The trip leaders were clear about what to do and what to expect. They offered recommendations on which lifts to take and how to get to certain areas in the resort, and created a Whatsapp group where we could share photos, ask questions, etc. They also offered free lessons for beginner skiers and snowboarders. The hotel where we stayed at was nicely located — within walking distance to Yamano eki and Maruike — and the food (breakfast and dinner) was great. I especially liked that the onsen was open 24 hours. The party was a neat way to unwind, play some games, and chat. I’m already planning on joining another TSC trip to Shiga Kogen next month. Can’t wait!
